Creating a KPI

The first step to the custom metric or KPI workflow is to create the KPI.

Navigate to your General Account Settings at the bottom of the menu column. Once in your general account settings, scroll down the page until you see the section “Custom KPIs”.

Click on the “Manage custom KPIs” box to open the library for your custom KPIs. There are two options for creating a new KPI:

Create a KPI using the Add Tool

  1. Navigate to Settings, Manage KPIs.

  2. Click on the green “+Add Custom KPI” box to fill out the KPI form. And save.

Fields in the form include:

Enter the measurement unit for the KPI ex. liters, kg, meals, partner, number etc.

You can select a theme from the dropdown menu that best fits the KPI

Standard

Yes

Select an ESG standard from the dropdown menu. If the KPI is not linked to an international standard or framework, select the option "Other or Custom"

Associated goal

No

You can link a KPI to a goal that you've created in your Goal Module.

Data type

Yes

Select one option: Absolute, Cumulative, Average (see below for further details)

When creating a custom KPI, you can select the type of data you want to collect.

Absolute data: data is static, standalone data or measurements. The data entered for the time period is the final data, any newly entered data for that time period will overwrite previous data.

Cumulative data: the aggregate or sum of data collected over a period, typically representing the sum or accumulation of individual data points.

Average: the data is calculated by summing all values and dividing by the total number of values, providing a typical or representative value for the set.


Creating a KPI using the CSV Importer

  1. Navigate to Settings, Manage KPIs.

  2. Click on the gray “+CSV Import” box. The csv file importer will appear where you can download the csv file template.

  3. Fill out the template, then upload the filled-out csv file to the csv file importer.

  4. The csv importer will walk you through “mapping” the fields in Brightest with the fields in your csv file template. Ensure that the correct fields are selected.

Fields Not mapped highlighted in gray indicates a field that was not detected. If you would like to add this field be sure it is included in your csv file and select the field from the dropdown menu.

Fields Not mapped highlighted in red indicates a required field that was not detected. To continue, ensure that this field is in your csv file and then select the field from the dropdown menu.

  1. Once you approve the mapped fields, you have an opportunity to review the uploaded data before it is saved to your library.

  2. If everything looks correct, click “save” and your KPIs will be uploaded to your KPI library.


KPI data settings for data "roll up"

The KPI "data type" will affect how the KPI data is summarized in your license.

Below are use case scenarios to help guide your in selecting the relevant data type.

Collect data at the asset level and view a summary of the data at the sub-license level

Cumulative

If you wish to collect KPI data from multiple assets and see a summation of all data for that KPI at your license level. Brightest will "roll-up" the data entries from each asset and show the KPI sum. Add the KPI to your asset and add the KPI to your E, S or G Dashboard to view the data summary.

Collect data from a survey and view a summary at the license level

Cumulative

If you wish to collect data from multiple survey respondents and see a summation of all data for that KPI at your license level. Brightest will "roll-up" the data entries from each survey response and show the KPI sum. Link the KPI in your survey and add the KPI to your E, S or G Dashboard to view the data summary.

Enter data once per time period at the license level.

Absolute

If you wish to enter data once per time period for the KPI. Each data entry will overwrite the previous entry for the same time period. Add the KPI to your E, S or G Dashboard to view the data summary.

Enter data once per time period, roll-up KPI data from sub-licenses to Global license

Absolute Sum

If you wish to see a summary of your absolute KPI values from your sub-license(s) to your Global license, create the KPI in your Global license with the data type "Absolute sum"

Locate your custom KPI library in your account Settings.
Click on the green "Add Custom KPI" tool.
Fill out the KPI form.
To bulk upload multiple KPIs at once, click on the "CSV Import" button.
The CSV importer will open. Download the csv file template and fill it out.
Upload your filled-out csv file to the csv importer to start the field mapping process. Ensure all required fields are mapped.
Review the information and then click save to add the KPIs to your KPI library.
