🏗ī¸Bulk Asset Creation

To import and create multiple new assets in Brightest via a .csv file upload, visit the "Assets" tab in the Sustainability section of your Brightest dashboard, and navigate to Import → Upload Assets.

There, you can download our Asset Import CSV Template.

  1. Fill out your asset data correctly in the file.

  2. In the csv importer, use the "Choose File" button to select the file you want to upload, and then click the green "Upload File" button to complete your upload.

  3. If your upload is successful, you'll see a green notification and your assets will be visible in the "Assets" tab in the Sustainability section of your Brightest dashboard. If there's an error, you'll receive a notification your upload needs to be corrected.

If you're familiar with GHG Protocol, you'll notice several of the asset types map or correspond to a specific Scope 3 emissions carbon accounting category. This is designed for cases where you need to represent an emissions value in a specific carbon accounting category, such as historical Scope 3 emissions data or other environmental data that falls outside of an operational boundary. In most cases, it's more efficient to use the Brightest "Transit" asset to represent Scope 3 areas like transportation and travel without necessarily creating an asset for it, however we want to give you the flexibility to account for carbon and other sustainability data in the way that makes the most sense for your organization.

Possible issues and troubleshooting

When you're importing data via .csv file, it's important to check that your data is clean and accurate before uploading. Because it's a .csv (comma separated value) file, make sure there aren't any extra commas in your fields that might be mistaken as a field divider.

If you see an error like "varchar is too long," that means the character count in the field you're uploading exceeds the limits of our database, and you should try to find particularly long fields or names and try to shorten them if possible. However, just because you see a red error message doesn't always mean your upload wasn't successful. Always be sure to first check your assets table to see if your new assets uploaded correctly. If they did, you can likely ignore the error. Above all, make sure you don't import the same assets twice and duplicate your data.

Finally, take care to manage the size of your file. We typically recommend bulk uploading assets 100 or less at a time. Trying to create hundreds or thousands of assets at the same time may run into performance issues. If you need to upload a lot of assets and you're on an Impact, Transform, or Enterprise plan, it's best to speak with your account manager.
