  • Name of your goal

  • Description - add a short description of the goal

  • Link to related document, info, or resource (optional) - if you have any documentation you'd like to link, you can add it here

  • Does your goal have specific targets? - If your goal has specific targets that you wish to measure, toggle the switch “on”

  • Do you want to include this goal in materiality analysis? - If you are using this goal as part of your materiality analysis, toggle the switch “on” (if you are not using materiality in Brightest, you will not see this option)

  • Theme or ESG Category - select a theme that most closely matches the goal’s purpose

  • Targets - if you've already created environmental or climate related targets, you can attach them to a goal here, if not, leave blank

  • Sustainable Development Goal(s) - Link correlating UN Sustainable Development Goal(s)

  • Add an optional image to your goal - one will be automatically generated if you do not add your own

  1. If your goal has specific targets that you would like to measure, select "Next", if not and you turned that switch "off" in the form, select "Save and Finish" - if you would like to add a target to an existing goal, you can always edit the goal later on.

Adding Targets to a Goals

  1. After selecting "Next" on your goal creation form, you'll be taken to the Goal Targets Form. First, you'll need to decide your target type.

Target Types
  • Number - Will count or track the absolute value that you wish to reach (ex. # of trees planted, # of volunteer hours, donation amounts)

  • Percent - If your goal is based on a reduction or increase in a percentage (ex. community engagement, emissions)

  • Average - will average the instances of the data or the metric (ex. If you're being rated on a scale of 1-5, and you hope to receive an average score of 4, Brightest will calculate your average and tell you where you are on the basis of that scale)

  • Partner Document (% completed) - if there is a specific document that you want your partners/suppliers to have completed or uploaded (ex. If we want to make sure that our suppliers have completed an impact report and we want to make sure that impact report is uploaded). You'll then name the specific document that you want your partners to upload in the "Document Name" Field (Impact Report, Supplier Contract, etc.), your target number, and you can assign which types of partners you want the target to apply to (supply chain, vendor, non-profit, etc.).

  • Baseline - will compare two years that you establish as a baseline year and a target year (ex. We recycled 1000 plastic bottles in 2023, but want to recycle even more in 2024. We could then measure our performance in 2024 relative to the baseline in 2023.) Instead of an optional start date, you'll assign a baseline year.

  1. You can then select a start date (optional) and a goal/target end date (required).

  2. Once you select your target type, the "Top Metric, KPI, or Measurement Unit for Goal" Field will appear. Here you can select one of the default metrics, link to an existing KPI, or create a new KPI and metric. Note: The target type must be compatible with the KPI metric unit.

  3. In the "Target" Field, enter the target for your goal

  4. You can add more than one target for a goal by selecting "+ add new target" (ex. We have plastic bottle recycling goal, but we also want to track the number of volunteers helping with that effort.) When your done adding targets, select "Save and Finish" or "Save and Add Another Goal".

Once your goals are created, you'll then see them in your Goals tab in the Goals Module listed by target year.
